About Me

Dundee, United Kingdom
My name is Jodie McCrystal and I am currently at Dundee University studying Interior and Environmental design. This course is a mixture of interior design, architecture, lighting, furniture and conceptual design. So far throughout this course I have thoroughly enjoyed the furniture and lighting projects and would be interested in taking the knowledge I have gained during these projects further. I am currently in my final year and working towards my degree. I am working on lighting for my mini/major thesis project.

Second year projects

Second year group furniture project
This project was a group workshop based project to create a piece of furniture. The group that I was a part of designed and built a new take on the traditional vanity table. The design allows the user to sit comfortably, apply their make-up or do their hair and to also view their entire outfit through the cleverly placed mirrors which are angled to give a full length view of the user. Below are some sketches produced by the group through the design process.

Below are some images of model making produced by the group.

Below are some photographs of the final outcome of our group work with some images of our presentation.

Second year sustainability project

The first part of this project as a class we attended a book making class with Emma at the DCA in Dundee. During this course Emma taught the class to make books from recycled materials. I found during this project that I enjoyed the book making. The second part of the project was to design a sustainable home with Emma as the client. I started this project by making quick little macuets to see what sort of building shape would suit the space best. There was a lot of research into sustainable building techniques involved in this project so that I could choose the most appropriate building methods for the site and for Emma's needs. Below are some images of my sketch models

The brief for the house was two bedrooms, a studio space for Emma to take work home when necessary, kitchen/dinner, lounge and bathroom. Below are the visuals that I produced for the interior of my final design.

The presentation for this project took place in the DCA and my presentation is shown below. For the presentation I also produced some exterior sketches of my proposed building along with a small site plan.

Second year CAD project

The idea for this project was to bring studio work and CAD class work together into one project. The brief for this project was to redesign the long, thin fifth floor area of the Mathew building of the Duncan of Jordonstone university with a cafe space as a main focus. Below are some early sketches from this project.

Below are some visuals of my concept, showing the bright colour scheme and the raised seating areas that are linked by ramps situated along the long narrow space.

Second year group project

This project was a repeat of the first year interdisciplinary project that involved Interior design and Architecture students. In second year the brief was to produce an object that expressed the sensation of the process of Occupation.

The images above are development images that my group worked through to come up with our final design pictured below.

My group decided that our occupation object would convey the process in which students travelled through the level 5 are in the Mathew building of the university. We decided to convey though movement of the student by using four different colours to mark the route that different students might traverse. The four colours where Red, Green, Blue and white. Each colour represented a different path. The image below shows which path each colour represented.

We marked each path starting at a single door that the majority of students used to enter/exit level 5. We also used a Perspex box suspended from the ceiling with the four colours threaded from the entrance/exit door, through the box twisting within the box, and then out the other side towards the ground where the four colours travelled the paths using coloured tape. The Perspex box represented the university and the way in which many different types of people use the one space. The twisting of the colour threads represented the union created within the university.
